CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Specialized Functions
Plant cells v.s. Animal cells
Prokarytes v.s Eukarytes
Specialized Functions
- Cell Boundaries: cell wall, cell membrane, nuclear membrane
- Movement: flagella, cilia, pseudopods, vesicles
- Protein Processing: ribosome, golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus
- Energy: chloroplast, mitochondria
- Support: cell wall, cytoskeleton
Plant cells v.s. Animal cells
- Both cells have cell membranes.
- Plant cells are rectangular. Animal cells are irregularly shaped.
- Plants have cell walls to hold them up. They have chloroplasts for photosynthesis. They have large vacuoles for storing lots of water.
- Animals have centrioles for cell division, while plants don't.
Prokarytes v.s Eukarytes
- are made of nucleotides
- do not provide nutrition
- Nucleic acids store hereditary information.
- Their codes provide instructions for building proteins.
- Ex. DNA & RNA
